The aim of this study was to examine the stimulating as well as detrimental effects of exercise on cognitive functioning on novice and expert athletes. In this experiment, 18 male soccer players (10 novices and 8 experts) performed a treadmill running test according to an incremental running protocol until they reached steady-state 90% heart rate reserve. Psychomotor and cognitive tests were administrated before and immediately after exercise. These consisted of simple reaction time (RT), speed anticipation and Stroop tests. The results showed that high-intensity exercise had no significant detrimental effect on cognitive performance in expert and novice players. It is more valuable to use sport-related cognitive and psychomotor tasks to compare novice and experts information processing capabilities pre and post exercise.
